William Armstrong Smith Papers

We are pleased to announce that the William Armstrong Smith Papers, 1966-1974, are now open for research. William Armstrong Smith was a Georgia state senator from the 34th District (Fulton County), from 1966 to 1974. The collection documents his career and to a lesser degree his campaigns as well as his continued interest in legislative matters after his senate career ended (1975-1978). An important aspect of the collection is correspondence Smith created after his senate career with Georgia politicians, including: Howard “Bo” Callaway, John J. Flynt, Jr., Wyche Fowler, Zell Miller, Sam Nunn, as well as with United States Presidents Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford and Richard Nixon.

Lewis R. Morgan Papers

We are pleased to announce that the Lewis R. Morgan Papers, 1961-1995, are now open for research. These are the chambers papers of Judge Lewis R. Morgan which document his thirty-five-year judicial career with the United States District Court (1961-1968) and the United States Fifth (1968-1981) and Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals (1981-1996).

First Annual Max Cleland Alive Day Program

The Russell Library was proud to present the first annual Max Cleland Alive Day Program. This program commemorates the day in April 1968 when Cleland survived terrible injury serving the U.S. in Vietnam and honors his strength and courage in overcoming these life-altering injuries by recognizing similar experiences of servicemen and women and those who have worked to support them. This year's Alive Day Award recipient is James M. Mayer, himself a double amputee veteran who works tirelessly to help traumatically injured veterans recover and resume civilian life.

Interview with former state senator, Bobby Rowan

On February 9, 2005, the Russell Library conducted an oral history interview with Bobby Rowan, Georgia Senator (1963-1974) and Public Commissioner (1989-1994). This interview forms part of the Russell Library's Documentary Oral History Series, which includes interviews with Judge Griffin B. Bell, Governor Carl E. Sanders, and diplomat Martin J. Hillenbrand.

Sheryl B. Vogt recipient of Archivist of the Year award

Sheryl B. Vogt, director of the Richard B. Russell Library for Political Research and Studies at the University of Georgia, is the 2004 recipient of the Archivist of the Year Award.

Author Sally Russell discussed researching and writing the first biography of her grandfather, the patriarch of the Russell family. Russell, Sr. served in the state legislature (1882-1887), as solicitor-general of the western circuit of the superior courts of Georgia (1888-1896), as judge of the superior court of the western circuit (1898-1902), on the first Georgia Court of Appeals (1906-1916), and as Chief Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court (1922-1938). Tales from the Assassination Tapes: Why Johnson and Russell Doubted the Warren Report

Author and journalist Max Holland discussed research and findings from his recently published book, The Kennedy Assassination Tapes. This major documentary history gives a full chronicle of the presidential conversations of Lyndon Johnson regarding the Kennedy assassination and its aftermath. A leading scholar of the assassination, Holland transcribes and places in context the telephone calls President Johnson made and received as he sought to stabilize the country after November 22, 1963.
