2003 Russell Symposium
October 20, 2003

This year's 2003 symposium (right) examined "The Weapons of Mass Destruction Threat to the American Homeland" and the issues of homeland security and preparedness for biological, nuclear or other attacks. United States Senator for Georgia, Saxby Chambliss offered the keynote address followed by a panel discussion moderated by Gary K. Bertsch, University Professor and Director of the Center for International Trade and Security, Department of International Affairs, University of Georgia. The panel featured Dr. Ruth David, President and CEO, ANSER (Analytic Services, Inc.); Stephen E. Flynn, Jeane J. Kirkpatrick Senior Fellow, Council on Foreign Relations; Asa Hutchinson, Under Secretary, Department of Homeland Security; Paul McHale, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Homeland Defense; Joseph M. Henderson, Associate Director, Terrorism Preparedness and Response, CDC; and Sam Nunn, Co-chairman and CEO of the Nuclear Threat Initiative.

Recent syposiums have focused on "The United States, NATO, and European Security in the 21st Century," "U.S. Security interests in the 1990s," "Security Challenges in the Post-Cold War World," and "US Policy toward China." Commencing in 1993, the Russell Foundation, along with the University of Georgia, has sponsored three Richard B. Russell Public Symposiums. Named for the late Senator Richard B. Russell, who chaired the Senate Armed Services Committee for sixteen years, the symposiums are a discussion of public policy in which Senator Russell had particular interest. All of the Russell Symposium proceedings have been televised, published, and distributed widely in government and academic circles.
